Robert Hall has become one of the most
popular special effects makeup artists in Hollywood. Hall
and his studio, Almost Human, bring an
exciting new dimension to the world of creatures, body
parts, scarred victims, zombies, monsters, demons and more.
Hall's creatures are celebrated worldwide on the mega
successful hit shows Angel,
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and Firefly. His
work will also be showcased in the upcoming theatrical film
projects, Strange
Wilderness,
Big Stan, and
Killer Pad.
Recently,
Hall has marked his writing and directorial feature film
debut with the semi-autobiographical drama,
Lightning Bug starring
Bret Harrison (The Loop) Laura Prepon
(That 70's Show), and Hal Sparks
(Queer As Folk). The film was a festival hit in 2005
garnering 3 top awards at various festivals and breaking
attendance records at the Philadelphia Film Festival. The
DVD is available at most video stores and retail chains
courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment.
Originally Born In Detroit, Hall began his
career as a youngster in Alabama, buying makeup and
materials at the local Wal-Mart for his friend's Halloween
costumes. While his friends were out playing sports, Hall
was busy figuring out the best way to make a scary mask more
lifelike, getting tips from horror shows such as Creature
Feature. At the age of 18 and fed up with his paying job as
a chicken deboner for Tyson Chicken, he traveled more than
300 miles to Selma, Alabama, where he impressed
Tom Burman and talked
him into hiring Hall to work as an assistant makeup effects
artist on Abel Ferrara's Body Snatchers.
Hall remembers thinking, "Wow, I get paid to do this?" So
with that enthusiasm and love for the craft, he continued to
take risks in pursuit of his passion. With less than $100
dollars in his pocket, Hall packed his bags and moved to
Hollywood.
He worked non-stop for other special effects makeup studios
where he mastered his craft and developed his own unique
style. During this time he also worked for Stan Winston on
such big budget films as The
Ghost and the Darkness,
The Island of Dr. Moreau
and The Relic.
In 1996, Hall decided it was time to step out on his own and
set up his own studio. With the company's name pulled from
the title of a KISS song, Almost Human special effects
makeup studio was born. Since its inception Almost Human has
become one of the best in creating the industry’s most
talked about corpses, body parts, monsters, zombies and
demons, as well as alarming and realistic character
makeup's.
In the early stages of the company, Hall worked with
extremely small budgets on 22 films for
Roger
Corman's Concorde Productions including
Aliens Among Us,
SeaWolf and
The Doorway. During
this time he learned how to do amazing work within a few
days without a big studio
budget,
something that he considers a major benefit for the
television and movie producers he works with today.
One of Hall's personal highlights was getting the
opportunity to work with Robert
Englund, who portrayed one of his favorite
horror icons Freddy Krueger, on Englund’s new directorial
Effort, Killer Pad.
Hall resides in Los Angeles with his wife actress/model
Bobbi Sue Luther.
When not working he spends his time writing and recording
music, playing bass in the band
Zero 1 with Hal Sparks, and he directs music
videos for rock bands such as Buckcherry,
Manntis and Kevn Kinney (Drivin N Cryin). |
