FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: “Hi,
do you guys rent out fully mechanical whales with lobster
claws? And I need it by tomorrow!”
A: In general, we are not a rental house, and
only create custom fx, prosthetics and animatronics. These
specific creations usually have a short shelf life and or
are proprietary designs for a specific production. That
said, we do have a few smaller items that we rent but for
the most part that is not our specialty. Call Debbie in the
shop if you have a simple request such as a fake head.
Q: “Hi,
I’m a student filmmaker, do you guys give discounts?”
A: In general, something costs us the same
amount to build for you as it would for a large production
company. You might try finding someone at a makeup school
who need photos for their portfolio.
Q:
“Hi, I really want to break into the business, can you e
mail me in detail how to do this?”
A: Please understand that we cannot respond to
all of these requests. Do as much on your own to create
makeup’s, and take Dick Smith’s course
www.dicksmithmake-up.com.
If you don’t know who Dick Smith is………..watch “The
Exorcist” and visit his site. Can’t express enough how
important he is to the business!
Q: “I aint got no money for
courses! I live in LA can I be an intern!?”
A: Send work
photos, and intern request letter to:
studio@almosthuman.net
Q: “Hey, I’ve noticed a lot of
people claim to have done fx makeup for “Buffy” and
“Angel"... what's up with that?”
A: Unfortunately,
a lot of people do claim to have created FX for these shows.
Let us clarify: John Vulich did amazing work on “Buffy” for
5 seasons and also did “Angel” season 2. Dave Miller did the
first season of “Angel” and Joel Harlow contributed to
Season 6 of “Buffy”. Robert Hall/Almost Human did Seasons
3-5 of “Angel” / contributed to Season 6, and all of Season
7 of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”.
Any one else who claims to have “created makeup fx for these
shows” is misrepresenting themselves. Most likely they were
sculptors, painters or technicians who worked for the above
shop owners or one of the MANY day player on set makeup
artists who applied the prosthetics over the years for the
larger episodes. Hope that helps.
